Dr. Hon Fernando Cheung Chiu-hung is a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (2004-2008, 2012-now). He is also the founder and the vice-chairman of the Labour Party.
Cheung worked in the United States from 1988, and became a naturalized United States citizen. He obtained his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990. He served as the Head of the Oakland Community Council (屋崙華人服務社) in San Francisco. To recognize his contributions, Municipal Government of Oakland named September 13 as Dr. Fernando Cheung’s Day.
After he moved back to Hong Kong in 1996, he became a lecturer at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He became the vice-convener of Civil Human Rights Front in 2002. He has close relationship with the pro-democrats. He joined the functional constituency of social welfare of the Legislative Council from 2004-2008. In 2012, he re-entered Legislative Council by regional direct election, and was re-elected in 2016.
